Charlie Cave, local name unknown

Mark, Simon, Nic, Mat L. and Bernd

Spent one hour following Prof's dodgy directions, then looked at the map and found it relatively easily. Group lethargy was eventually overcome by Nic's nagging, so we got changed.

Thoroughly encouraging entrance, a small slot in the leaf-strewn forest floor, just large enough for fat bastard (Mark) to get through. 10-15m pitches descended in steps through fossil grottos which were quite pretty. At about 40m depth, a small window on the opposite side of a blind pot proved to be the way on, and from here the cave changed character to bare rock, no formations and turned quite cold. Since we'd eventually decided to go underground, spirits were quite high until this point.

However the exit from the bottom of this pitch was a small tube plastered in shit-coloured mud which gave access to 'Toilet Chamber.' The u-bend led to another small chamber at the head of a high pitch, all of which was coated in the aforementioned mud. Now there is mud and there is MUD, but this was something special; sticky, brown gunge which totally caked everything it came into contact with. Stops, jammers, carbide generators etc. all looked like so many turds hanging off a harness.

It was at this point that discretion was decided to be the better part of valour, so we headed out. After much deliberation we decided to leave it rigged as we didn't see why we should be the only ones to suffer this HELL. Supposedly, the lower parts of the cave are clean-washed, but we'll leave the exploration for bigger idiots than ourselves.

Simon Cope

Amanda, Bob and Matt J. would return to this cave to derig.
